permalink  Memorial Day

Just in case you grew up in our liberal school systems thinking that Memorial Day weekend was a holiday for opening the summer season with a picnic outing, we recommend that you visit Neva Li. She has the text of the proclamation creating the observance posted on her website.

HEADQUARTERS GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
General Orders No.11, WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 1868

The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit….

Go visit Neva Li and read all of it.

permalink  A Brand Spanking New Blog

Primo authoress Norma Bruce has started a weblog called Illegals Today. We’ll expect the same high caliber writing that we have always enjoyed at her main site, Collecting My Thoughts. She hasn’t told us why she opened a second front, but our guess is that this very polite lady wants to preserve the genteel tone of her first weblog about general life, and make her strong political statements in a separate venue.

She is a very acute observer of the human scene, so we’ll count on the new venture for a reliable update on the issues surrounding illegal immigration into the United States. Says Norma:

Illegal immigrants, undocumented workers, amnesty, guest workers and the Congress and employers who are part of the Illegals are the topics here. Whether they’re stealing your job or your SS number, I’d like a word–una palabra–with you.

Roughly 10% of Mexico’s population of about 107 million is now living in the United States, estimates show. About 15% of Mexico’s labor force is working in the United States. One in every seven Mexican workers migrates to the United States.

Visit the new blog for a wake-up call, if you are still dozing.

permalink  The Stone Camel

One of the blogs that always gives us a chuckle during our trip around the Blogosphere is The Stone Camel. Blogger John is a software guru who had, up until now, been living in California with his Chinese wife. And they are moving to China so that she can be near her people! To a possession-laden stick-in-the-mud like [American Daughter] this seems almost unimaginable. But we will enjoy their adventures vicariously. If you haven’t gotten to know Stone Camel yet, now is the time to start following this story. Of course, they can continue to blog from China, so hopefully we will not lose these most interesting friends.

But for today’s humor, read John’s account of the cargo shipment that was lost when the Titanic sank. It puts the recent Hispanic celebrations in perspective.

[Editor's note 1/15/2011: Sadly, the Stone Camel is no longer being blogged by our friend, but has been taken over by a commercial advertiser and all the posts are gone.]
