The Mormon Myth has been exploded by contemporary science. The geology of western New York, anachronisms within their own scriptures, and now compelling DNA evidence — all discredit the foundational claims of the religion.
Their gospel, which they regard as infallible, asserts that Native Americans are descended from a lost tribe of Israel that reached the New World more than 2,000 years ago. Recent DNA studies ripped at the heart of this part of their teaching. Simon G. Southerton of Canberra, Australia, a molecular biologist and a former bishop of the Mormon church, published the results of extensive DNA studies in Losing a Lost Tribe: Native Americans, DNA, and the Mormon Church. His DNA evidence proved that the ancestors of American natives came from Asia, not the Middle East.
At the time the initial findings were published, the news caused quite a stir in American anthropological and archeological circles, and made some ripples in the religious community. But if a colorful story provides a common focus for a large group of people to formulate a moral code and become productive citizens, why should the rest of us care?
We should care because extreme versions of this system of thought, like radical Islam, are being used to abuse women and force children into incestuous relationships. Recently a distraught young woman posted a cry for help in an Internet discussion forum. We looked into it because one of our readers contacted us to say that he was a co-worker of the young woman and to substantiate her story.
She claimed to have been sodomized by her brothers while growing up, and to be currently in an incestuous relationship with her father. In her words,
I am on the verge of suicide. If tommorrow doesn’t come around for me, I certainly will miss nothing.
(Editor’s Note: We delayed publishing this story after we initially received it, to do as much source verification as possible. We have concluded that the woman named does exist, does live in the community that she claims to, and does in fact have a work history at the place of employment she claims to. We have also verified the particulars of that corporation, and it matches her description. We are withholding her name, the name of the co-worker who communicated with us, and the name of the corporation. This is both to preclude possible job or community retaliation, as it appears to be a pervasively fundamentalist Mormon community, and to protect the American Daughter Media Center because of the legal ramifications.)
Americans often ask why the moderate Muslins do not keep their own house in order, why they do not rein in the Islamofascists who want only to destroy. Here is the answer in our own country. The moderate Mormons do nothing to curb the polygamists, woman abusers, and child molesters in the parts of the United States where they are totally in political control. They look the other way when they should be convicting rapists and pedophiles. Read our essay
