It appears that the Obama administration is doing everything in its power to make sure that our borders are unsecured and our immigration laws ignored.

Program 287g is a federal program administered by the Department of Homeland Security. It trains local police to identify, question, and detain illegal immigrants. It is an excellent program which allows local police to cooperate with the federal government to enforce immigration law. It has been implemented in numerous states and counties around the country and has been a great success wherever it has been tried.

Well, all that stopped when Mr. Obama became President and decided to take a wrecking ball to the program. It has been gutted to the point where it is no longer as effective as it once was. And now, in the final blow, Obama has appointed a police chief from Houston, TX to head the administration of this program. This is the same police chief who insisted that Houston remain a sanctuary city for illegals even after one of his own policeman was killed by an illegal. This policeman would be alive today if Houston had not been a sanctuary city.

From Sanctuary city police chief will be head of 287g program under Obama:

President Obama has appointed former Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt to oversee the 287g program with Immigration and Customs Enforcement….

While Hurtt was police chief, he supported keeping Houston’s “sanctuary city” in place and resisted participation in 287g….

One person who is outraged that Hurtt has been given this important position, is the widow of Houston Police Officer Rodney Johnson, who was killed by an illegal alien with a long criminal record.

On September 21, 2006, Officer Johnson, 40, was shot to death by Mexican national Juan Leonardo Quintero, during a routine traffic stop.

Quintero is a convicted child molester and DWI offender, and was deported to Mexico by U.S. immigration officials in 1999. He had been working for a Houston area landscaping company and despite the DWI conviction, was driving a company vehicle at the time Officer Johnson stopped him.

The illegal alien shot Officer Johnson in the head five times with a 9mm handgun he had concealed in his waistband.

Officer Johnson was a 12 year veteran of the Houston Police Department and a U.S. Army veteran. While serving on the HPD, Johnson received two Lifesaving Awards. He left behind his wife Joslyn (also a police officer) and five children.

Had Chief Hurtt decided to participate in the 287g program, Quintero would have been identified as an illegal alien, during one of his multiple arrests in Houston, and Officer Johnson would still be returning to his loving family every night….

Unfortunately, under Obama, we are likely to see an increase in serious crimes committed by illegal aliens.

Meanwhile, state and city lawmakers across the country are taking immigration law into their own hands. From the Washington Post we have this:

With widespread attention focused on Arizona’s tough new law against illegal immigration — and a measure approved this week in the small town of Fremont, Neb. — similar proposals are under consideration across the country.

Five states — South Carolina, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Michigan — are looking at Arizona-style legislation, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. NDN, a Washington think tank and advocacy group, said lawmakers in 17 other states had expressed support for similar measures….

In the first three months of this year, legislators in 45 states introduced 1,180 bills or resolutions dealing with immigrants, an unprecedented number, according to the NCSL. By the end of March, 107 laws and 87 resolutions had been adopted by 34 states, with 38 bills pending.
