A cosmetics manufacturer admits that it is using aborted fetal cell lines in a line of anti-aging skin creams.

NeoCutis, a Switzerland-based bio-pharmaceutical company with offices in San Francisco, is using Processed Skin Cell Protein, or PSP, an ingredient developed from skin cells harvested from an aborted fetus. Some years ago scientists discovered that fetal skin has an ability to heal without scarring.

PSP was developed by scientists at the University of Luasanne from the skin tissue of a 14-week male fetus donated by the University Hospital in Switzerland.  They created a process to extract proteins from fetal cells and established a working cell bank to produce the human growth factor with the optimum balance of nutrients needed to restore aging skin.

The company’s website explains the origin of its PSP ingredient, culminating with the assurance that “No additional fetal biopsies will ever be required”:

“A small biopsy of fetal skin was donated following a one-time medical termination and a dedicated cell bank was established for developing new skin treatments. Originally established for wound healing and burn treatments, today this same cell bank also provides a lasting supply of cells for producing Neocutis’ proprietary skin care ingredient Processed Skin Cell Proteins.”

Debi Vinnedge, executive director of Children of God for Life, is not comforted by company’s assurance of no additional fetal biopsies:

“It is absolutely deplorable that Neocutis would resort to exploiting the remains of a deliberately slaughtered baby… as though the life of the one child … has no value.”

“What we don’t know is how many other fetuses were involved before they perfected that one cell line. There’s a possibility there were more,” Vinnedge added.

Vinnedge is organizing a boycott of all NeoCutis products, beginning with the company’s investors and offering free publicity to companies whose products are not derived from aborted fetal cell lines.

NeoCutis may be contacted by phone 1-866-636-2884, by e-mail info@neocutis.com, or by using the on-line form at http://www.neocutis.com/contact.php.

permalink  Building the SEIU Empire

ACORN co-founder Wade Rathke discussed the role of ACORN and SEIU in the government takeover of healthcare during a book signing in New Orleans.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) have a symbiotic relationship. Rathke called SEIU “one of the pillars of the ACORN family of organizations.”

While serving as ACORN’s Chief Organizer, Rathke created SEIU Locals 100 (Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas) and 880 (Illinois, Indiana and Kansas). After establishing SEIU, Rathke held executive positions in labor unions while working as ACORN’s Chief Organizer.

ACORN whistle-blowers swore SEIU and a coalition of labor unions gave ACORN $1,729,462 for political activities and union organizing in 2008, mixing together taxpayer money and union funding. It would seem that the American taxpayer has been picking up the tab to promote Rathke’s political agenda and advance his unionizing activities.

While governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich signed an executive order allowing collective bargaining, which helped SEIU unionize health-care workers. The mega-union had been Blagojevich’s biggest supporter, donating more than $1.8 million over two campaigns for governor.

Now SEIU is in the process of building an empire to handle America’s healthcare needs, which explains its unrelenting fight for a public option. Obviously, the mega-union envisions greater demand for its services and plans to mine the mother load of new dues-paying members.

permalink  Republican Sell-Outs Assure Sunstein Nomination

Wednesday evening the Senate voted 63-35 (60 needed) to end debate on the nomination of Cass Sunstein, the radical Harvard University law professor whom Brother O selected czar of the powerful White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA).

Judge Andrew P. Napolitano, a Fox News analyst, places Sunstein on the far left of the Democrat Party, to the left of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

“We have never had anybody in a regulatory position with this kind of power that is this far to the left of the American people,” says Napolitano. “His potential damage is limitless.”

Sunstein’s nomination had been put on hold in the Senate since late April, but Senator John Cornyn (R–TX) decided to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and assure the radical’s nomination by lifting the hold.

Cornyn wasn’t the lone Party sell-out. Senate Republicans could have held up the Sunstein nomination but for the seven magnificent RINOs — Susan Collins (R-ME); Olympia Snowe (R-ME); Bob Bennett (R-UT); Orin Hatch (R-UT); Judd Gregg (R-NH); Richard Lugar (R-IN); and George Voinovich (R-OH) — who joined with all but three — Mark Pryor (D-AR); Blanche Lincoln (D-AR); and Jim Webb (D-VA) — of their “enlightened” statist brethren Democrats to invoke cloture and guarantee Sunstein’s nomination before the Democrat controlled Senate.

The Senate is expected to have an up or down vote to rubber-stamp the nomination of the leftist radical tomorrow.

permalink  ACLU Upset With Obama's Reversal on Detainee Photos

For the first time in his presidency, Obama has actually made a smart decision.

President Obama met with White House counsel Greg Craig and other members of the White House counsel team last week and told them that he had second thoughts about the decision to hand over photographs of detainee abuse to the ACLU, per a judge’s order, and had changed his mind.

The president “believes their release would endanger our troops,” a White House official says, adding that the president “believes that the national security implications of such a release have not been fully presented to the court.”

At the end of that meeting, the president directed Craig to object to the immediate release of the photos on those grounds. In an Oval Office meeting with Iraq Commander General Ray Odierno, the president told him of his decision to argue against the release of the photographs.

The move is a complete 180. In a letter from the Justice Department to a federal judge on April 23, the Obama administration announced that the Pentagon would turn over 44 photographs showing detainee abuse of prisoners in Afghanistan and Iraq during the Bush administration.

Of course, transparency to the point of stupidity advocates, the ACLU are very upset!

The Obama administration’s adoption of the stonewalling tactics and opaque policies of the Bush administration flies in the face of the president’s stated desire to restore the rule of law, to revive our moral standing in the world and to lead a transparent government. This decision is particularly disturbing given the Justice Department’s failure to initiate a criminal investigation of torture crimes under the Bush administration.

It is true that these photos would be disturbing; the day we are no longer disturbed by such repugnant acts would be a sad one. In America, every fact and document gets known – whether now or years from now. And when these photos do see the light of day, the outrage will focus not only on the commission of torture by the Bush administration but on the Obama administration’s complicity in covering them up. Any outrage related to these photos should be due not to their release but to the very crimes depicted in them.

Yada, yada, yada… the ACLU whine that if we don’t release criminal photos to the media circus to circulate around the world, and enflame our enemies, that we are not being patriotic. I applaud the president’s first smart decision. The crimes can be dealt with and punished without a media frenzy.

From Ed Morrissey:

What changed? The decision angered the military, which recalled the hysterics over the Abu Ghraib photos. Even Obama’s allies on the decision admitted that the release would damage security and put American troops in more danger, including John Kerry, who said they made great propaganda for our terrorist enemies. With the CIA already battling the White House after the release of the OLC memos, the last thing Obama needed was a war with the Pentagon.

In the end, this decision may not matter at all. You can count on the ACLU to pursue this all the way to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court may uphold the lower court decision.

permalink  Piled Higher and Deeper

All across America, cold weather and snow stories are dominating the local news. Several bloggers are tuned in as well. Our friend Wayne at Babylonandon writes:

Yeah….Right.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

2 pm

-4ºF

-22ºF windchill.

Al Gore…you can plant your … lips right in the middle of my large hairy (frozen) white butt.

Global warming, indeed.

A little more direct than our prose at American Daughter usually is, hence the omissions, but he does make his point. And from a more comfortable vantage in Texas, Silvio offers words of encouragement at My View:

To all my friends freezing in the East and Midwest…

….Hey, I feel your pain. I remember freezing to death many years ago in Milwaukee.

So enjoy your annual encounter with winter and remember that the baseball season is two months away.

Tail wag for the cartoon to Silvio at My View.

From the Deep South ADMC writer Amelia notes:

We are freezing!! Let’s put Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi on the tarmac at O’Hare in wet bathing suits and have them tell us about global warning then! How stupid do they think we are but more to the point, how stupid are they to always release this global warming stuff at a time when we are literally freezing to death. I think six died last night from the cold! Talk about tin ear for timing!

And once before Al Gore delivered a speech in NYC on the coldest day of the year there.

If the liberal press as well as those politicos pushing this unproven theory as fact expect to be taken seriously, shouldn’t they maybe release information on global warming in say, July, for example?

And here at our editorial epicenter in Virginia, we have left the water running in the sink at the remotest corner of the house in the hope that our pipes will not freeze and break. Meanwhile, the mainstream media, who have so much news space to devote to “global warming,” are not talking about this, because it is an inconvenient reality that does not support their agenda.

For a mainstream source you have to go to something relatively obscure like the National Weather Service website, which is not necessarily a hot stop on the Internet:

Current Watches, Warnings and Advisories
Oswego (New York)
URGENT – WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE

AN ADDITIONAL 10 TO 15 INCHES OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY …. GUSTY WEST WINDS WILL ALSO PRODUCE SOME BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WITH NEAR WHITEOUTS AT TIMES. THIS WILL BRING STORM TOTALS FOR THE WEEK TO OVER 90 INCHES IN SOME AREAS.

ADDITIONAL HEAVY LAKE EFFECT SNOW IS POSSIBLE FROM FRIDAY NIGHT INTO THE WEEKEND. LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNINGS MAY NEED TO BE EXTENDED THROUGH THE WEEKEND.

TRAVEL WILL BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE AT TIMES ACROSS THE EASTERN LAKE ONTARIO REGION THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING ESPECIALLY ON NORTH SOUTH ROADS SUCH AS INTERSTATE 81 AND ROUTES 11 AND 3.

Ninety inches! Do you realize how many feet that is?

Scientists who reason based on data rather than a political agenda or wishful thinking dispute the theory of global warming. Dr. Timothy Ball, one of Canada’s premier climatology experts, writes:

….why is it that when scientists who have studied the Global Warming phenomenon for years say that humans are not the cause nobody listens? Why does no one acknowledge that the Emperor has no clothes on?

Believe it or not, Global Warming is not due to human contribution of Carbon Dioxide (CO2). This in fact is the greatest deception in the history of science. We are wasting time, energy and trillions of dollars while creating unnecessary fear and consternation over an issue with no scientific justification. For example, Environment Canada brags about spending $3.7 billion in the last five years dealing with climate change almost all on propaganda trying to defend an indefensible scientific position while at the same time closing weather stations and failing to meet legislated pollution targets.

No sensible person seeks conflict, especially with governments, but if we don’t pursue the truth, we are lost as individuals and as a society. That is why I insist on saying that there is no evidence that we are, or could ever cause global climate change. And, recently, Yuri A. Izrael, Vice President of the United Nations sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) confirmed this statement. So how has the world come to believe that something is wrong?

Maybe for the same reason we believed, 30 years ago, that global cooling was the biggest threat: a matter of faith. “It is a cold fact: the Global Cooling presents humankind with the most important social, political, and adaptive challenge we have had to deal with for ten thousand years. Your stake in the decisions we make concerning it is of ultimate importance; the survival of ourselves, our children, our species,” wrote Lowell Ponte in 1976….

[Dr. Ball has an extensive background in climatology, especially the reconstruction of past climates and the impact of climate change on human history and the human condition. He has a Doctorste of Science from the University of London, England and was a climatology professor at the University of Winnipeg. Currently he is the Chairman of the Natural Resources Stewardship Project (website). ]

Doubtless none of these real-world experiential data will get in the way of the Liberals ideological goals. They would like to trash America and give the advantage to China via the Kyoto Protocol. Mind you, Al Gore knows so much more than we do because he is so much smarter than we are. After all, he invented the Internet.

Gideons handing out Bibles on public sidewalk arrested after school officials complain

Cross-posted from Stop The ACLU Blog

From an article in WorldNetDaily:

© 2007 WorldNetDaily.com

Two men who are members of Gideons International, the Christian organization that is famous for, among other ministries, placing Bibles in motels and giving them to children, have been arrested after trying to hand out Bibles on a public sidewalk in Florida, according to a law firm.

Officials with the Alliance Defense Fund have confirmed they will be representing Anthony Mirto and Ernest Simpson, who were arrested, booked into jail and charged with trespassing.

Jeremy Tedesco, one of the ADF’s lawyers on the case, confirmed to WND that the organization’s clients were on a public sidewalk when they were handing out Bibles and school officials summoned police.

Yes, it reads public sidewalk and yes, it reads school officials. I hope you’ll also notice that it doesn’t say anything about sex offenders, child molesters or military funerals.

“The First Amendment protects the right to engage in religious speech on a public sidewalk,” ADF Senior Legal Counsel David Cortman said. “Members of the Gideons have been highly respected for decades as peaceful providers of free Bibles to those who want them.”

The arrest happened Jan. 19, when Mirto and Simpson were on the sidewalk outside of Key Largo School in Key Largo, Fla., and were distributing copies of the Bible to those interested.

“Neither man entered school grounds,” the law firm said. “After the school’s principal called police, a Monroe County sheriff’s officer asked the men to leave immediately or face trespassing charges. As the men prepared to leave, the officer decided to arrest both individuals.”

A hearing is scheduled March 5 in Monroe County Court in the cases, and ADF attorneys are preparing motions to dismiss the charges.

“Officials cannot use fear of arrest as a means of bullying law-abiding Christians into silence,” Cortman said. “These men broke no laws when they decided to communicate their message on a public sidewalk.”

Tedesco noted that sometimes school officials have a misconception about whether they can control activities on school grounds and adjacent public sidewalks. But the First Amendment does provide a protection for speech on those parcels of ground that are public, he said.

Lets see… public schools, public grounds, public sidewalks, public officials and public law enforcement.

“There’s no reason why they should be put in jail,” he said.

The ADF is a legal alliance defending the right to hear and speak the truth, through strategy, training, funding and litigation.

The Gideons, a group founded in the late 1800s, has as its “sole purpose” the goal “to win men, women, boys and girls to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ through association for service, personal testimony, and distributing the Bible in the human traffic lanes and streams of everyday life.”

Members of the Gideons, who pay their own expenses so 100 percent of the donations to the group go toward Bible purchases and distributions, have placed the Bible in 181 nations in 82 different languages over the years.

The organization focuses on hotels and motels, hospitals and nursing homes, schools, colleges and universities, the military and law enforcement and prisons and jails.

“The demand for Scriptures in these areas far exceeds our supplies that we are able to purchase through our donations. Much more could be done – if funds were available. However, we are placing and distributing more than 1 million copies of the Word of God, at no cost, every seven days in these areas” the group said.

The organization only gives away the Bibles with the Gideon logo on the covers, but plain Bibles are available for consumers to purchase at its distribution center at P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, Tenn., 37214-0800. Information about the products is available on the group’s website.

The Gideons serve as an extended missionary arm of the Christian church and are the oldest Christian business and professional men’s association in the United States.

Great! Get those laws keeping sex offenders away from our school kids and daycares overturned. Get those laws that permit our loved ones to grieve and honor our dead in peace overturned.

But get them Christians, handing out Bibles, in jail. Got to protect the kids and…

Did they legalize drugs in Florida or are they putting something in the water? The Dixie County Ten Commandments issue, immigration raids in Miami, and now this.

permalink  Hamas Victory

The militant organization Hamas has apparantly won a significant victory in the legislative elections held by the Palestinian authority yesterday. Hamas is regarded by the United States as a terrorist organization, and with at the least disfavor by many western European countries. Hamas is on record as advocating the destruction of Israel, and has not backed off from this position since fielding candidates in legitimate Palestinian politics.

From the report in the San Fransisco Chronicle:

After voting in the Gaza Strip, Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar said the group “will not change a single word in its covenant” calling for the destruction of Israel. He said Hamas would continue its path of “resistance” against Israeli occupation in the West Bank even as it serves in the Palestinian parliament.

“Hamas will not turn into a political party. Hamas plays in all fields. It plays in the field of resistance,” said al-Zahar.

Response of western leaders is described in the Jerusalem Post:

World leaders react to Hamas victory
Jan. 26, 2006

The apparent victory of Hamas in the Palestinian Authority legislative elections evoked strong reactions Thursday in international community.

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, who has positioned his conservative government as one of Israel’s strongest allies in Europe, called Hamas’ apparent victory “very, very, very bad result,” news reports said.

“If this news was confirmed, everything we had hoped for, that chance for peace between Israel and Palestine, is postponed to who knows when,” Berlusconi said, according to the ANSA and Apcom news agencies. The comments were made during a TV show on a station Berlusconi owns.

The European Union, responding to the possibility of a Hamas-controlled PA, announced that it would work with any peaceful government.

“We’ll be happy to cooperate with any government on the condition that it is peaceful,” EU Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner said.

US President George W. Bush declared that he would not negotiate with Hamas until the group renounced its desire to destroy Israel.

In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, Bush stated that a political party must support peace, and must act peacefully.

A State Department official said Wednesday that Hamas was a terror organization and that whoever denied Israel’s right to exist could not participate in a Palestinian government.

The Palestinian Legislative Council has a 132-seat parliament. The incumbent President, Mahmoud Abbas, represents the political pary Fatah, which has ruled until now. According to some reports, in Wednesday’s election Hamas appears to have gained enough seats to become the second largest party, and to deny Fatah a simple majority. From the Chronicle:

Based on exit polls, Fatah seemed certain to remain the largest party in the 132-seat Palestinian Legislative Council but, for the first time in its 10-year existence, to lose its absolute majority.

“Fatah won the vote, but Hamas won the election,” said Khaled Abu Toameh, Palestinian affairs analyst for the Jerusalem Post.

But the China View (Xinhua News Agency) is reporting that Hamas has the most votes:

RAMALLAH, Jan. 26 (Xinhuanet) — Fatah said on Thursday that it would not join a coalition government led by Hamas, which emerged victor from the Jan. 25 parliamentary elections.

Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, who is a senior member of the mainstream Fatah movement, made the statement after holding a brief meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

“Hamas will be asked to establish a new cabinet,” Erekat told reporter, adding that Fatah will not join the Hamas-led government but remain a opposition.

The senior Fatah official also said that the movement will rebuild itself after the apparent Hamas victory in Wednesday’s parliamentary ballot.

Earlier, Hamas claimed that it has won 77 seats of the 132-member Legislative Council, defeating Abbas’ Fatah movement.

If confirmed winner, Hamas will establish a new government in accordance with the Palestinian law, which stipulates that the party or faction that holds a majority in the parliament will form the cabinet.

Shortly after Hamas’ claiming victory, Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei, also a senior Fatah member, and other cabinet members, submitted their resignations, which were accepted by Abbas.

Final results of the elections will be announced later in the day.
