The candidacy of Dede Scozzafava has divided the GOP between its Reagan conservatives and the party establishment.
Leftist progressive Republicans might not raise the eyebrow of your average Snowe-blind Maineiac, but the thought of adding another DIABLO (Democrat In All But Label Only) statist-minded representative to Washington has GOP conservatives and libertarians apoplectic.
Scozzafava is in a three-way race with Democrat candidate Bill Owens and Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman to fill the seat of departing Republican John McHugh in New York’s 23rd Congressional District.
Scozzafava, who has been lauded by Newt Gingrich, supports abortion, homosexual marriage, Brother O’s stimulus spending, cap-and-trade, and Card Check; and is endorsed by Markos Moulitsas, founder of The Daily Kos; NYSUT (New York State United Teachers), the largest labor union in New York and affiliate of the National Education Association, and ACORN’s (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now’s) Working Families Party.
Right now Democrat Bill Owens is leading Hoffman Scozzafava, but Hoffman’s poll numbers have been steadily rising and have surpassed Scozzafava, which means that Scozzafava is now just a spoiler and could keep Republicans from holding the seat that McHugh routinely won by 2-to-1 margins.
Hoffman is running as the Conservative Party’s candidate because New York’s local GOP establishment entered their “smoke-filled room” and chose Scozzafava behind closed doors, bypassing a primary and the party’s grass-roots voters.
Scozzafava’s leftist politics aren’t the only embarrassment for the Republican Party. She called the police on John McCormack, a Weekly Standard blogger, who questioned her about support for Card Check and then used the propagandist media to smear the journalist.
The call has gone out for Scozzafava to withdraw or be dumped from the race. More than a dozen conservative bloggers and organizations have called for her resignation and for the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) and the Republican National Committee (RNC) to withdraw their support and put their resources behind the real Republican in the race.
If Hoffman wins the big one, his campaign will become the template for grassroots conservative campaigns nationwide next year. The special election for New York’s 23rd Congressional District just might be the spark that ignites an internal revolution to regain the soul of the GOP and bring common sense and sanity back to the party of Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater.

GOP success in 2010 would end the progressive agenda in America. According to Vice President Joe Biden, if Democrats lose 35 House seats in 2010, it’s doomsday for Brother O’s agenda.
“If they take them back, this is the end of the road for what Barack and I are trying to do,” Biden said at a fundraiser for Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) in Greenville, Delaware.
Republicans need 40 additional seats to regain control of the House. Currently Democrats hold 49 seats in districts that Senator John McCain (R-Ariz) won in last year’s presidential election.
Biden gives the Republicans only “one shot” to stop Brother O’s agenda, and if they fail “the dam is going to break” … letting loose “[a]ll the hidden Republicans that don’t have the courage to vote the way they want to vote because of pressure from the party” to merge with the collective stream of Democrats and form a new era of bipartisanship.
Biden reserves the term bipartisanship for those Republicans who are willing to set aside free market principles and ideas of limited government to capitulate to Democrat desires to control people through a centralized government and a planned economy. Republicans who hold to their principles and oppose statism are condemned as hatemongering, racist obstructionists.
Nonetheless, Biden’s assessment of the 2010 landscape is interesting. He readily admits Brother O’s attempt to increase the power and size of government to control the private sector could mark the end of the progressive agenda. And it could happen, but only if enough people will do what must be done before it’s too late.
Judge Andrew P. Napolitano, a Fox News analyst, places Sunstein on the far left of the Democrat Party, to the left of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
“We have never had anybody in a regulatory position with this kind of power that is this far to the left of the American people,” says Napolitano. “His potential damage is limitless.”
Sunstein’s nomination had been put on hold in the Senate since late April, but Senator John Cornyn (R–TX) decided to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and assure the radical’s nomination by lifting the hold.
Cornyn wasn’t the lone Party sell-out. Senate Republicans could have held up the Sunstein nomination but for the seven magnificent RINOs — Susan Collins (R-ME); Olympia Snowe (R-ME); Bob Bennett (R-UT); Orin Hatch (R-UT); Judd Gregg (R-NH); Richard Lugar (R-IN); and George Voinovich (R-OH) — who joined with all but three — Mark Pryor (D-AR); Blanche Lincoln (D-AR); and Jim Webb (D-VA) — of their “enlightened” statist brethren Democrats to invoke cloture and guarantee Sunstein’s nomination before the Democrat controlled Senate.
The Senate is expected to have an up or down vote to rubber-stamp the nomination of the leftist radical tomorrow.

In a stunning turn of events, House Republicans won a critical symbolic victory last Wednesday in uniting against Obama’s $1 trillion phony economic “stimulus” plan. Call your Republican congressman and thank him/her. Send them money too, if you can. They did right for a change and we really need to let them know it. If your representative was one of the eleven Democrats who courageously crossed lines to oppose the plan, call to thank them too. If you have neither in your district, send money to the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Of course the Democrats passed the bill anyway, 244 to 188. But they’re mad! After the vote they came out swinging, lambasting the Republicans, with Nancy Pelosi issuing a memo to “interested parties” warning that Republicans have put themselves in a “politically untenable position” by opposing the bill. The memo is a laundry list of alleged Republican crimes.
Methinks thou protest too much, Nancy. When a Democrat gets mad at you, you know you’ve done something right.
The “stimulus bill” is nothing more than a massive serving of Democrat pork, with huge payoffs to favored groups like ACORN, a laughable tax cut averaging about $12 per week and a modest amount for infrastructure that will not be spent for years. None of the provisions in this bill will stimulate the economy.
But Democrats are not interested in stimulating the economy. They are interested in securing their majority into the foreseeable future by purchasing votes and placing great swaths of the economy under their thumbs. Obama’s cultivation of Republican votes is merely an effort give him cover for this heist and prevent Republicans from using it as an issue against Democrats in the upcoming 2010 elections.
Oh yes, 2010!
For those of you who don’t know, in 2010, Congressional Democrats have to defend 84 seats in Republican districts that George Bush carried strongly in both the 2000 and 20004 elections. These are very vulnerable seats. All Republicans need to do to get them back is prove that they are still Republicans!
If Obama succeeds in suckering Republicans into supporting this hog, Republicans will have lost what may be their last chance to convince the public that they have any relevance at all. They will have no issue to run on in 2010. Instead they will share blame for the stimulus package’s certain failure, which should be readily apparent by then.
Not only that, Republicans will be on record supporting a blatantly radical leftist power grab, setting the stage for massive tax increases that will be necessary to fund these programs in the future, and creating trillion dollar deficits “for years to come”… in Obama’s own words.
If they fall for this the Republican Party can kiss conservatives goodbye, and for that matter practically everyone else. The Dems know that too.
The Democrats’ true goal in cultivating Republican support for this monstrosity is the same goal as always: to stomp out the competition and secure unchallengeable power for the foreseeable future.
As usual they are relying on public ignorance and Republican stupidity to pull it off. But for a change House Republicans didn’t take the bait, so the Dems are mad.
House Republicans did the right thing in delivering absolutely zero votes for the “stimulus bill.” I pray Republican Senators have the wisdom to do the same. The future of the Republican Party, and perhaps the nation, depends on it.
What You Can Do
Call your Republican senator and urge him/her to filibuster the stimulus plan in the Senate. If you don’t have a Republican senator, call the Democrat. Most if not all Democrats will get behind Obama, but a call to them will let them know just how disgusted you are with this massive pork bill and they may soften up a bit.
Most Republican senators are now against the bill, but five have indicated support: Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Kit Bond (R-Mo.) Snowe is the weakest link, but someone needs to read them all the riot act.
The nominating conventions of the two major political parties are about to start. There are a lot of things that the American public should know about them that are not being covered by the mainstream media. Most important, they are still hotbeds of corrupt political influence, and the taxpayers are being soaked to support that betrayal.
Most folk believe that the convention costs are covered by donations of “soft” money to the parties. But the tab for the taxpayers this year will be over 82 million dollars:
The group Taxpayers For Common Sense said … if the parties want to hold their conventions they should pay their own way.
In a written statement, the group said Congress has provided $16.3 million in direct funding for operations at each of the two conventions….
Congress also approved a total of $50 million in funding for security through Homeland Security….
And what are the good citizens getting for their hard-earned money? A chance for organized lobbiests to put pressure on booze-befuddled lawmakers counter to the best interests of those same taxpayers. The Sunlight Foundation is diligently keeping a running documentary on the spirited (pun intended) parties planned for the convention-going lawmakers. There’s one list for scheduled Democratic parties and another list for scheduled Republican parties.
Party Conventions Are Free-For-All for Influence Peddling
The Democratic and Republican national conventions are supposed to be publicly financed electoral events with reasonable ethics restrictions on influence-peddling by lobbyists. However, the conventions have become mostly privately financed soirees funded by corporations and lobbying firms that seek favors from the federal government. The unlimited soft money donations from special interests to pay for the conventions, and the lavish parties and wining and dining at the conventions, run counter to the federal election law and congressional ethics rules.
Today, the presidential nominating conventions are not very newsworthy because the presumptive nominees are chosen in advance; fewer people care about the conventions, as declining TV viewership shows; and yet more special interest money than ever is raised and spent at the conventions. Under the guise of “civic boosterism” unlimited and unregulated contributions are funneled through a giant loophole to host committees that largely serve the political purpose of providing advertising and access to corporate and other moneyed contributors….
There’s a cash cow here, and some people are actually in the business of “government relations,” a euphemism for hooking up corporate clients with politicians in the party atmosphere. One such is Steve Knuth, the owner of a St. Paul government relations firm. He offers his opinion:
Knuth says …. political influence is always a good investment.
“It’s a business decision and I think it’s a very calculated one,” he says. “I don’t think many of the clients that we work with make these decisions about spending you know a hundred or two hundred or $500,000 lightly. And I think they see a return on that investment or they wouldn’t be making it.”
Note, dear readers, that the return is for the corporate clients, not for you, even though you are subsidizing this effort.
The Democratic Party came to embrace an uneasy alliance between southern planters and urban workers, while the Republican Party came to represent the co-existence of midwestern farmers with East Coast manufacturers. While little kids pledge allegiance to the flag across America, the Democrats and the Republicans are selling and giving away the property of the American people in lucrative deals that represent a payback for the financial support the political parties received from commercial interests. All the heroic legends about mythic American presidents turn out to be only so much propaganda, as we come to realize that the Presidency is nothing more than a mirage.
As United States citizens watch the presidential campaign play out in a mixture of despair and disbelief, many are trying to decide which is the “least worse” option. Now a new Zogby poll confirms what we have suspected:

Alarmingly, there are significant numbers of citizens who believe the solution to their antipathy for the performance of the Federal government is secession. This same poll revealed that one in five American adults – 22% – believe that any state or region has the right to “peaceably secede from the United States and become an independent republic.”
The two-party system is a failure? Just ask the PUMAs, who watched in disbelief as Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in the Democratic primary, only to see the boys in the back room torque the party machinery to give Barack Obama the nomination. Or ask the folk in the Nobama Network, who say:
Nobama Network is … designed to bring together the Grass Roots Movements in America spawned by outrage over the actions of the DNC disenfranchising voters, reassigning delegates, selecting their illegitimate Nominee and diminishing the most basic factor that makes America great, our right to vote and be heard!
Or just ask the Ron Paul supporters, who legally elected delegates to the Republican national convention, and were told they would not be seated and are now planning their own national convention.
There was serious support for John Anderson when he ran for president. Ross Perot had really good ideas about government and if he had followed through, the third party movement that he created could have become a force to be reckoned with. Now we have to pin our hopes on Ron Paul to teach these machine pols a lesson.
Serendipity — as I was assembling the data for this article, one of the websites had a pop-up ad from FastClick. It was for one of those surveys you can take, for example to determine your IQ. But this one was a bit different. It popped up a frame that asked:
How dumb are you?
And I thought, if we continue to put up with the two major political parties and their distortion of democracy, “Very dumb indeed.”
HITRAP is an acronym coined by retired Marine Lieutenant General Bob Milligan when he was Comptroller of Florida. It means “Honesty, Integrity, Trust, Responsibility, Accountability, and love for the People we serve.” What this country needs are more Bob Milligans!
Why is the Republican Party in so much trouble? The easy answer is, “Because it deserves it.” There are many people in that now fast dying Party, in fact who follow politics in general who say, “Rhat’s just how politics is.” Perhaps that is so, somewhat. But, the U.S. system of government was never intended to be a case of “gotcha” or “one-ups-man-ship” or political careerism.
Men who had an abiding faith in the Almighty Creator of the Universe wrote the Constitution. Eleven years earlier when they penned in the Declaration of Independence, they wrote: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,…” read on because, “that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The writers believed, and they were right, that rights flowed from a source superior to the King or any other human. They and we believe that rights have their origin in and flow from the Creator.
[As an aside: A Creator creates. The Holy Bible, in John 1:1 states, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." God is the Almighty Creator of all things, in the Universe and beyond and it was that Creator that brought forth things that are observable and quantifiable into being incident to His spoken Word. Genesis 1:3 states, "And God said, 'Let there be light: and there was light.'" He did not wave His arms, take matter in His hands and mold it, do a dance, shake his body, bow or kneel. God spoke and there was light. Now, back to John 1:1, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Matthew 12:36 states: "But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the Day of Judgment." And that is followed by Matthew 12:37, which states: "For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." From this one can deduce that there is infinite power in the Word, and similarly in the words that we utter; what we utter is what will be. For those unbelievers who challenge my assertion that neither Obama nor Rodham-Clinton will be the next President, they will not, so pass the word. Does that translate into McCain will be? I don't know, yet.]
“That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,” This raises the question about the limits of Government’s authority and that question is answered in the next phrase, “That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government…”
A good friend who recently ran for office came in second to a young man whose theme was that given his lawyer background and knowledge of a bagful of dirty tricks, the voters should elect him and he would bring home the “bacon” for the next fifty years. If that is the foundation upon with that particular electorate wants political leadership, I for one, pity them. Their ignorance and selfishness make them unworthy and incapable of serious participation in the political process envisioned by the writers of the Declaration or Constitution. But, we have them, and to them appeal those politicians whether Republican or Democrat, who want fifty years of influence and power, in short “political careerism.” Political careerism is the root cause of the dysfunctional state of politics in the United States; and, I loathe political careerism and political careerists. Anyone care to inform me what the approval rating is for Congress and the President? Thanks, I already know.
It has been said, “The voters get what they deserve.” “…Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
Finally, Obama and Rodham-Clinton notwithstanding their ability to dupe large portions of the electorate are certifiable liars. Both are guilty of a plethora of repeated lies. A little piece from a largely unread book states in Revelation 21:8 “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” And they want to be President of the United States of America; and, want my vote? Get serious! What this country needs are more Bob Milligans!

“Conservative” Democrats are the political equivalent of the Trojan Horse in that they bring to the localities of America the destructive MARXISM of the National Leaders of the Democrat Party like Nancy D’Alessandro Pelosi, Harry “Undertaker” Reid, Obama & the Clintons. Like “Good Nazis,” their OK personal philosophy contributes to the evil of their leaders. Attack the national policies of the Democrat Party itself by pointing out how another Democrat Congressman or Senator allows Pelosi & Reid to raise taxes & steal the individual rights of citizens. Ignore the candidate, if he or she is legitimately conservative, & instead point out what’s wrong with the DEMOCRAT PARTY.
Just two hours before the Iowa caucuses begin, the latest Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby Daily Tracking Poll shows Barack Obama pulling ahead of the two other Democratic front-runners and Mike Huckabee widening a lead over Mitt Romney. (See poll results here.)
If these results hold, the Iowa caucuses will be good news for the American electorate. The credentials of the candidates are not a factor in this assessment. What matters is the meaning for the process of selecting a president.
Until now, the efforts of the two leading political parties to choose candidates have been all about political machines, money from big business interests, personal wealth, and experience with the Washington bureaucracy. (Mitt Romney, for instance, almost appeared to say he could buy the nomination with his personal fortune.) These components are the worst elements of American politics.
After several months of this cynical approach to what should be public service, suddenly the landscape is changing. Only-in-America Obama is going outside the party machine and mobilizing independents. It seems to be working. And barely-funded Mike Huckabee, who doesn’t have enough cash to mention, is reaching the man in the street with his populist message. A bonus — surprise dark horse Ron Paul is raising millions from motivated small donors with his libertarian approach.
If Obama and Huckabee win in Iowa, and Ron Paul makes a strong showing, it will be a statement that the ordinary voter in the heartland still thinks for himself. It will suggest that perhaps our presidency has to be earned, and is not for sale after all.
